Abstract
1342816 Ultrasonic inspection of tubing DART INDUSTRIES Inc 19 April 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 24691/71 Heading H4D The integrity of the bond between plating and the wall of a tube plated internally is checked by transmitting an ultrasonic pulse from inside the tube bore towards the plating and determining whether or not there is an appreciable interval between reception of the echo from the radially inner plating surface and reception of any echo from a more remote surface. In the embodiment described a transmit/receive transducer is mounted axially in the (liquid-containing) tube on a carriage having sprung arms which support wheels engaging the plating. This mounting allows a helical scan of the plating. The transducer is coupled to a pulse-echo instrument including a display C.R.T., the horizontal time base of which is deflected vertically by the echoes. The apparatus is calibrated by a pulseecho test on similarly-dimensioned but unplated tubing, by arranging for the inner and outer surface echoes to give displayed peaks at about 50% of the CRT screen height and separated by about 90% of the time-base dimension. A good bond on the test specimen will then produce a similar displayed echo pattern, but the two peaks will be substantially coincident (and the second peak will be of low amplitude) for a poor bond.
