Abstract

N-Alkylamides or N,N-dialkylamides are obtained by contacting a primary or secondary alkylamine with an allyl or vinyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid. The reaction is generally effected at a temperature of 15-100 DEG C. under atmospheric or elevated pressures and it may be catalysed by small quantities of water or acidic or basic catalysts such as the strongly acidic or basic forms of ion exchange resins. The process may also be effected by introducing a volatile reactant as gas or vapour to a point between the top and bottom of a still column down which the less volatile reactant is flowed at least partly as reflux. In specific examples the preparation of diemthyl-acetamide and di-n-propyl acetamide is described.
