Abstract

1,108,355. Coating tubular members. RICHARDS Ltd. 19 Nov., 1964 [23 Nov., 1963], No. 46341/63. Headings B2K and B2L. Apparatus for applying an internal and/or external coating of material to a tubular member comprises means for co-operation with the tubular member to form a reservoir for coating material said means including a pair of deformable diaphragms for sealing against said tubular member. In Fig. 1, a length of hose 10 is sealed with expandible plugs 12 which are also used for suspending the hose in a vertical position between supports 16 and 18. Compressed air is then mtroduced into the hose through valves 14 so as to hold the hose rigid. A reservoir 20 adapted to encircle the hose is threaded on to the hose and is provided with a felt or similarly deformable diaphragm 22 in the region or contact between the reservoir and the hose. The reservoir is then filled with coating material 24 and is then traversed up the hose so that the material 24 is applied evenly over the outer surface thereof. If desired the reservoir may thereafter be moved down the hose to provide another coating and for this purpose a lid 28 having a deformable diaphragm 20 to scrape off a doctor excess material. is applied to the reservoir. The initial coating may be cured or allowed to set and thereafter subsequent coats applied and the coating may be applied along sections of the hose and the hose moved or reversed to complete the coating along its entire length. A blank (not shown) having an outer diameter substantially equal to that of the hose may be provided at one end of the hose so that the reservoir can be slid on to it when the coating or one stage of it is completed. The 'blank with the reservoir thereon can be removed and subsequently applied to another hose to be coated. Fig. 2, (not shown) illustrates a similar device for coating the internal surface of a hose and in this embodiment the hose is supported by rings sewn to the exterior of the hose. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a hose is stretched horizontally and an open top reservoir with deformable seals at its ends is traversed along the hose. In such an arrangement about two thirds of the hose surface may be coated during one traverse and the hose rotated 120‹ after each traverse. Any polymer, copolymer or elastomer e.g. polyvinyl chloride, a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and nitriles, or polyurethane. which is capable of being brought into solution, paste or emulsion form and which on drying or curing will form a homogeneous film may be used as coating material.
