Abstract
1,107,991. Axial-flow and radial-flow blowers. SULZER BROTHERS Ltd. April 8, 1965 [April 8, 1964], No. 14980/65. Heading F1C. An axial-flow or radial-flow blower for circulating the coolant of a gas cooled nuclear reactor is supported within an opening 19 in a concrete wall 20 by means of a bearer surrounding the bearing and shaft seal housings 14, 15 of the blower and comprising a ring 28 embedded in the wall, a ring 26 connected to the housing 15 by screws 24, and an annular skirt 27 extending between the rings. The skirt 27 may be wholly cylindrical or wholly conical or, as shown, may have a cylindrical portion 27<a> and a conical portion 27b. The blower casing 16 is also connected to the ring 26, by screws 29 or by welds. The flow of heat from the casing 16 to the ring 26 may be reduced by restricting the parts of the casing contacting the ring 26 to small bands (38), Fig. 2 (not shown) or by a thin-walled ring 42, Fig. 3 (not shown). Gas-tightness is ensured by a sheet steel layer 22 inserted between the concrete wall 20 and a layer 21 of lightweight concrete and welded to the ring 28. Heat-insulation material 31 is disposed around the skirt 27 and the free portion of the ring 26 to protect them from the heat of the casing 16; the material fills the annular space between the skirt 27 and the layers 21, 22 to prevent convection currents occurring in the annular space. Cooling water is circulated through annular cooling jackets 32, 35 on the inner walls of the ring 26 and skirt 27. Except for the casing 16, the entire blower can be withdrawn through the opening 19 after the screws 24 have been undone.
