Abstract
In the manufacture of flat glass, particularly in ribbon form, on a bath of molten tin at least some of the tin ions in the glass surface which has been in contact with the molten tin are replaced by hydrogen ions and then at least a proportion of the hydrogen ions are substituted by ions of another element. The substitution of the tin ions is effected by treating the glass surface with a strong acid such as HCl for 1 minute at 100 DEG C. The hydrogen ions are then preferably replaced by ions having a similar ionic radius to the tin ions, such as lithium, calcium or zinc ions. This latter substitution is effected by contacting the first treated glass surface with a saturated solution of the inorganic salt, e.g. calcium chloride, zinc chloride, for about five minutes at 130 DEG C. If required this final salt may be one which upon further heat treatment of 500-600 DEG C. develops a colour in the glass surface due to stannous ions still in the surface, such as manganese, copper or silver, or silver salts may be used to give a silvered surface. Copper or other elements may be used to form an electrically conducting layer.
