Abstract

1,107,761. Window-operating mechanisms. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Oct., 1964 [3 Oct., 1963], No. 39076/63. Heading E2M. A vehicle door window winding mechanism comprises a reversible electric motor, Fig. 6 (not shown) mounted inside the door and connected by a flexible drive shaft, Fig. 9 (not shown) to a worm 28 Fig. 1 of a reduction gearing mounted on a rotatable shaft 14 of the window operating mechanism, a wormwheel 20 driving the shaft 14. The gearing is enclosed in a casing made up of metal sheets 21 and 22 pressed out at 24 to hold the worm and its bearings, the bearing ferrule 32 being adapted to hold one end of the flexible drive shaft, its other end being held in a bush 49 fixed to the motor shaft cover 46. Limit switches 78 and 79, Fig. 11, are used to stop the motor when the window reaches its fully open or closed position. The switches include followers at the end of arms 82 and 93 which engage a spiral groove 81 secured to the shaft 14, electrical contacts 98, 95 and 98a, 95a being actuated through a series of linkages from the followers. In the circuit, Fig. 10, the windings of the motor are indicated at 58 and 59 and connected to contacts 63, 64 of a reversing switch. Two spaced blades 65, 66 of the switch are connected to earth and are movable into and out of engagement with contacts 69, 70 which are connected to commutator brush 71. If blade 65 is moved to contact 63 and blade 66 to contact 70 current will flow through coil 58 and the motor will rotate ,in the direction of the upper arrow. Movement of the blades in the opposite direction will reverse the direction of the motor.
