Abstract

1,107,575. Programmed control of grinding. FUJITSU Ltd. and TOYOTA MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 13, 1965, No. 29750/65. Heading G3N. [Also in Division B3] A machine for grinding cams, e.g. control cams for inlet and exhaust valves of internal combustion engines, comprises a table T movable longitudinally of a base B and carrying a camshaft SP 1 rotated by a pulse motor PMQ mounted on the table. A slide XS movable longitudinally of the base B by a pulse motor PMR carries a grinding wheel G and a constant speed driving motor M therefor. A dresser DRS is mounted on a support DB movable relative to the slide XS by a pulse motor PMD. Information on an instruction sheet IS is fed into a computer JM and punched on to a tape PT which is read by control equipment PD distributing pulses to the motors PMQ, PMR, PMD. The slide T is moved to bring the desired cam W in register with the grinding wheel G by a handle H 1 or under the control of the punched tape; as the cam rotates the grinding wheel is moved towards and away from the cam-shaft to generate the desired shape. After one revolution of the cam shaft, the dresser DRS is moved towards the grinding wheel by a predetermined amount, the dresser DRS is withdrawn and the slide XS is advanced by an amount corresponding to the dressing; the next cam is then ground. There may be a set of tapes corresponding to the different diameters of the grinding wheel due to wear.
