Abstract

Novel 7a -methyl D 5(10)-estrenes which are unsubstitute in the 3-position and which contain in the 17-position a keto group or the group OX(a Y) in which X is H or acyl and Y is H or C1- 4 alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl are prepared by removal of 3-keto group from the corresponding D 5(10)-3-ones by thioketalization and reductive splitting. The starting materials contain in position-17 a 17b -hydroxy or -acyloxy group with or without a 17a -alky or -alkenyl group and these 17-substituents may be converted to other 17-substituents by standard procedures. The steroids of the invention, which are stated to have ovulation-inhibiting, gonad-inhibiting, anabolic, estrogenic and androgenic properties, may be made up into pharmaceutical preparations for oral or parenteral administration with suitable carriers.
