Abstract

1,179,147. 4-Acyl and 6-acyl steroids. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 9 Nov., 1967, No. 51084/67. Heading C2U. The invention comprises (A) 4-"acyl" -#<SP>4</SP>-3- keto and 6-"acyl"-#<SP>4</SP>-3-keto steroids of the pregnane and 17α-alkyl-androstane series; (B) 6-propionyl-#<SP>4</SP>-3-keto steroids of the androstane series; and (C) a process for preparing 4 "acyl" - #<SP>4</SP> - 3 - keto and 6- "acyl" - #<SP>4</SP> - 3 - keto steroids of the androstane and pregnane series comprising acylating a 3-enamine of a 4,6-unsubstituted-#<SP>4</SP>-3-keto steroid in a solvent, and converting the resulting 4-"acyl" and/or 6-"acyl" enamine to the desired product. When a mixture of 4- and 6-"acyl" products is obtained, it may be separated by chromatography. The term "acyl" denotes carboxylic acyl of 2 or more carbon atoms. The initial enamines are obtainable from the corresponding #<SP>4</SP>-3-keto steroids by known methods. Steroids (A) and (B) above are stated to possess anabolic, androgenic and gestagenic activity and may be made up with carriers or excipients into pharmaceutical compositions suitable for oral administration.
