Tanning; tanning with special chemicals.- Skins are tanned or tawed by treatment with an aluminium salt of a lower fatty acid such as formic or acetic, or a mixture of an aluminium salt and one of these acids, the long drying process being thereby avoided. Or the skins, after treatment with an aluminium salt, are introduced into a solution of a salt of such acid, such as formates or acelates of an alkali or alkaline earth; or according to another method, the salts are added to the water used for washing the tawed skins. Examples of the proportions of the materials employed are stated in the Specification.
