A wire packaging machine comprises a coiling device in which a rotary flyer helically wraps wire around a stationary take-up block from which the non-rotating wire convolutions descend by gravity on to a supporting platform thus to form an upwardly growing package, a distributer comprising a plurality of downwardly extending fingers successively moved to lie in the path of descent of such convolutions effective to horizontally displace such convolutions in circular progression as they drop toward said platform on to the top of the package being formed, and driven cam means for so moving the fingers. Wire W is wrapped around a fixed take-up block 2 by a flyer arm assembly 3 rotated by a shaft 6. Convolutions 8 of wire from the block 2 slide down a horn 7 to drop over fingers 10 of a rotating distributer on to a platform 21. The fingers 10 are pivoted to a fixed plate 12 and displaced laterally by a cam plate 14 rotated through a belt 15, speed reducer 16 and input shaft 17 from the flyer drive 6. Thi falling loops are thus displaced horizontally circular progression so as to overlap one anoth on the platform 21. The platform 21 may be continuously lowered by hydraulic cylinders 28 to maintain the top of the package P of loops at a prescribed level. Accumulator arms 20 may be swung in after a specified weight of loops has been deposited on the platform 21, which may then be raised by the cylinders 28 to compress the package P against the arms 20. The package may then be strapped, the platform 21 lowered and the package P shoved thereoff on to a conveyer 35 by a pusher plate 29 moved by an hydraulic cylinder 32. The take-up block 2 may have a vertical axis.
