Abstract
1,226,938. Coiling wire; drawing. BLAWKNOX CO. 9 Sept., 1969 [22 Oct., 1968], No. 44481/69. Headings B3E and B3P. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for handling relatively stiff strand and collecting it in coil form comprises a drum 2 mounted on a stationary support means 1 so as to be vertically rotatable, the drum 2 having a lower free end 19 so that turns of strand are wound on the periphery and are discharged from its free end 19, a rotatable strand collecting tray 4 having a surface extending radially of the drum axis, movable supporting means 93-96 for raising the collecting tray 4 to a raised position next to the free end 19 of the drum and to lower it to a position where the coil will clear the free end 19 of the drum, and guard means 17 surrounding and radially spaced from the drum 2, the guard means extending upwardly from the collecting tray 4 when it is in its upper position and substantially overlapping the free end portion 19 of the drum and being rotatable about the axis of the drum, whereby turns of the strand can discharge from the drum on to the collecting tray 4 within the guard means 17 and form a coil of strand therein. In operation the leading end of the strand 5 from a coil C on a rotatable pay-off tray 3 is passed through straightening rolls and a die 25 after which it is inserted into a radially extended gripper 11 (see 371 and 381 in Fig. 4). The drum is then rotated counterclockwise while the die 25 is rigidly raised by a fluid cylinder 28 to cause the strand to wind on the drum in a predetermined number of widely spaced turns until the last turn of the strand contacts a plow 12. As the first strand is wound on the drum it moves the gripper inwardly to the position shown in full lines 37, 38 in Fig. 4. As the last turn of the strand contacts the plow 12 the upward movement of the die 25 is stopped and the receiving tray 4 is raised so that a ring member 88 at the bottom of the movable guard 17 fits over the outer edge of the tray end lifts the guard from the grooves of brackets 18 of a stationary guard 16. The receiving tray 4 then frictionally engages the bottom and of the drum 2 so that the drum, tray and movable guard are all rotating at the same speed. Rotation of the drum and winding of the strand are continued until the strand turns are pushed downwardly by the plow 12 until they form a single layer of abutting turns extending from the plow to the gripper. A snubber roll 13 is then brought into contact with the layer of abutting turns, after which severing means 56 is actuated to sever the strand from the gripper. The speed of rotation of the drum is increased and the strand is drawn from coil C through the die 25 to be wound on the drum so as to be forced downwardly toward its free end. The strand then drops on to the tray 4 to form a coil D and the method is continued until the strand in the pay-off tray is pushed. Rotation of the capstan is then halted, the snubber roll 13 is moved to its retracted position, and the tray 4 which is no longer rotating, is lowered so that the coil D closes the underside of the movable guard 17 and can be pushed by means 21 on to a conveyer 20.
