Abstract
1,107,406. Generating combustion products under pressure. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Aug. 11, 1965 [June 5, 1964], No. 23459/64. Heading F1L. [Also in Division F4] A liquid fuel combustion apparatus for use with high-velocity combustion air streams and suitable for ram jets and gas turbines, has at least one flame-stabilizing baffle 1, Fig. 1, lying at an angle to the longitudinal direction of the combustion air flow passage and comprising at least one edge 9, 10 behind which a vortex 11, 12 is generated, and means 15, 16 to inject fuel into the vortex for atomization thereby. A series of such baffles may be arranged at circumferentiallyspaced points in an annular combustion chamber. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), one or more rectangular baffles are arranged in a plane at right-angles to the air flow passage with a fuel injection nozzle adjacent each corner of the or each baffle on the downstream side thereof. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), a cylindrical air flow passage contains a frustoconical array of substantially rectangular baffles connected at their upstream and downstream ends in circumferentially spaced fashion to a pair of frusto-conical rings connected to the passage wall by aerofoil struts.
