Abstract
An extensible paper web is made by reducing the width of a paper web, by an amount not exceeding the natural contraction capacity of the web, by forming a series of lengthwise corrugations spaced across the web and drying the web by bringing it into contact with at least one heated metallic surface, so that the crests of the corrugations contact the heated surface and the portions of the web between the crests contract to produce a substantially smooth-surfaced web. As described with reference to drawings (not shown), paper in an incompletely dried state is passed over a bowed roll with a cover of rubber having circumferential grooves. The paper is applied to the roll on the outwardly bowed side, is forced into the grooves by compressed air, or a brush or simply by its own tension, and leaves the roll, in a condensed state, on the inwardly bowed side. The drying of the paper is then completed, e.g. between a conventional dryer roll and a felt. The paper may be passed over the bowed roll more than once or more than one such roll may be provided if necessary to give enough condensation.
