Abstract

Crude acetonitrile containing an unsaturated nitrile as impurity is purified by treating the crude acetonitrile with a diene in a molar ratio of diene to unsaturated nitrile between 1 and 20 at temperature in the range from ambient to 250 DEG C. to effect a Diels-Alder reaction between the diene and the unsaturated nitrile, removing any excess diene and distilling the resulting product to recover pure acetonitrile. The process may be effected under autogenous pressure either batchwise or continuously, the diene compound employed may be butadiene or cyclopentadiene and the unsaturated nitrile impurity may be acrylonitrile.
