Abstract
1,106,872. Stencilling-apparatus. UNIMARK CORPORATION. 10 March, 1966 [15 March, 1965], No. 10672/66. Heading B6C. Articles such as potatoes 73, Fig. 4, are fed in succession on rollers 7 of a conveyer 2, Figs. 1 and 4, past a printing position 3 below a printing drum 42 rotating in synchronism with the conveyer. The drum is provided with a plurality of stencil screen plates, and within the drum is a container 83, Fig. 8, for pressing powder in the form of one or more sticks 84 pressed by weights 85 against a rotary brush 80 in contact with a screen in printing position. The drum is supported on arms 40 by means of sleeves surrounding and free to move a small distance relative to a shaft 48 supported on stationary arms 41. When no article is present at printing position, the drum moves downwards to a position where the screen in printing position is out of contact with the brush. When an article is present, it moves the drum upwards and brings lugs 107 thereon into a position to engage an arm 96 and cause a pawl 103 to index the brush. An electrostatic field is produced across the air gap between the article and screen by means of electrical connections from a D.C. source 108 to the rollers 7 in printing position and to the screen or brush, so as to cause powder abraded from a stick by the brush and forced through the screen to move on to the article in the required design areas, where it is later fixed by heat or by a fixative substance sprayed thereon. If a plurality of sticks are used, a plurality of brushes are provided, for using powder of different colours.
