Abstract

Livestock feeding apparatus comprises a hopper movable along a track located over or adjacent a row of livestock pens, and electrically driven discharge means for discharging feed from the hopper to individual pens in turn, the discharge means being switched on and off by control means which are adjustable to vary the time of operation of the discharge means and thereby vary the mount of feed delivered to an individual pen. As shown the hopper 6 is suspended from runners 4 on parallel rails 2 and is moved therealong by a motor 5 which drives a rubber-covered wheel 12 which is in frictional engagement with a rail 2, the motor being mounted on a plate 13 mounted on a spring-biased arm 15. The feed discharge means comprises an auger 7 driven by motor 11 which is started when switch 16 is operated by a first striker 20 and stopped when switch 17 is operated by a further striker 20, the strikers 20 being adjustably positioned on the rails. A second auger 7 driven by a further motor 11 with associated switches 16, 17 may be provided so that two pens can be fed at the same time. The hopper is filled from a bulk supply at one end of the track and means for reversing its direction of travel are provided at the other end of the track. In a modification the hopper is manually moved along the track which may be located at or near ground level or on top of the pens and the or each auger is driven by an electric motor con- trolled by electrical timing means which is manually set. When a single auger 7 is provided the hopper may be suspended from a single rail.
