Abstract
1,106,436. Controlling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 8 July, 1966 [14 July, 1965], No. 29924/65. Heading G6C. A control element operating mechanism for a nuclear reactor comprises two portions, one incorporating a lift-lower mechanism and an electromagnet for supporting the other portion, and the other portion incorporating an armature for engagement by the electromagnet and a releasable mechanical coupling for engagement with a control element, either of fuel or a neutron absorber, a further releasable mechanical coupling enabling the armature and the electromagnet to be locked together. The two mechanical couplings are releasable by twisting in opposite directions. The further coupling, as shown in Fig. 5, comprises a pin 33 on the armature entering a peripherally extending slot 35 in a wall 36 secured to the electromagnet, the slot being open ended so that the pin can be disengaged from it thereby disengaging the coupling. An additional pin 32 and slot 34 are engageable when the pin 33 and slot 35 are disengaged in order to transmit a torque to engage the first mentioned coupling, which coupling is disengaged by a torque transmitted through the engagement of the pin 33 in the slot 35. This arrangement prevents the serious incident which might otherwise occur if the control element was in the core and the mechanism retracted, and the considerable portion of the mechanism between the electromagnet and the control element were to be released by the electromagnet to strike the core a severe blow, e.g. the control element might be rendered immovable or the components of a large region of the core might be locked together. In the embodiment described, coolant flows up a duct within the control element. The upper portion of the mechanism including the electromagnet and armature is housed in a doublewalled pillar, the space between the walls of which contains instrumentation cables and thermal and radiation shielding material.
