Abstract

Thermoplastic polymeric (e.g. polystyrene) particles (e.g beads) containing uniformly distributed throughout them as an expanding agent, water droplets averaging 5-40m dia., may be prepared by incorporating water as a fine dispersion into the monomer or monomers to be polymerized, and subsequently effecting a suitably catalysed suspension polymerization of the resultant water-in-monomer emulsion in an aqueous medium. The suspension may contain emulsifiers and stabilizers, e.g. ester of an aminated fatty acid mannitol dioleate, methanol, N-vinyl pyrrolidone/methyl acrylate copolymer, polyvinyl alcohol, CMC, water soluble starch, BaSO4 calcium silicate and also foamed polystyrene, or a graft polymer of styrene and ethylene oxides. The polymerization may be catalysed by benzoyl peroxide, tert-butyl perbenzoate, di-tert-butyl peroxide, a -a 1-azobis-isobutyronitrile and/or dicumyl peroxide. Fire retarders e.g. tris-(dibromopropyl)-phosphate dyes and pigments are optional additives. There may additionally be present in the particles a gaseous, volatile or gas-forming compound which is insoluble in water, e.g. pentane or air. Petroleum ether of b.p. 30-70 DEG C. may be added during the polymerization as an anti-coagulant; the volatile compound specified above may also be added at this stage. The particles may be foamed by; (a) heating in a perforated closed mould; (b) extruding at a temperature above the softening-expanding temperature of the particles. They may also be partially expanded e.g. by steam treatment, before finally foaming as above. The particles may be stored, especially if they contain a volatile liquid, for a time sufficient to allow part of this liquid and for the water to evaporate and be replaced by air. The expanded products have a low density, e.g. of the order of 10-15 Kg/M3.
