An apparatus for providing an indication of the distance, or change in distance, between a seam roof and floor (e.g. in coal mining) comprises two telescopically engaged tubes 2, 4 extendible relative to one another by a compression spring 6 which urges tube 4 against the roof R, the lower tube being fixed to a base 1 on the floor F and attached to the top of the tube 4 is one end of a strip spring 16 the other end of which is fixed to a rotatable drum 9, and the spring 16 is such that it always tends to roll itself into a coil, whereby it rotates the drum 9, as the tubes 2, 4 are moved relative to one another, by an amount corresponding to the relative linear displacement between the tubes. The drum 9 is coupled to a shaft 10 of a potentiometer 13 connected by a cable 14 to an electrical indicating circuit or instrument (not shown). The indicator may be adjusted to indicate the actual separation or the changes in separation between the roof and floor surfaces.
