Abstract

1,105,803. Measuring electrical conductivity. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. Nov. 1, 1965, No. 46040/65. Heading G1N. The proportion of active clay in a green sand moulding composition is determined by measuring the electrical conductivity and temperature of a known weight of the composition mixed in a known volume of water and comparing its conductivity at the measured temperature with standards of known composition. The slurry obtained by mixing the composition and water is decanted into a beaker 17, Fig. 1. A conductivity dip cell 12, comprising two electrodes (19), (20), Fig. 4 (not shown), embedded in a plastics casing (18), and surrounded by a stainless steel filter basket 14, Fig. 2 (not shown), of perforated steel sheet covered with wire mesh, is immersed in the slurry and the conductivity measured using a Wheatstone bridge 11. The temperature is measured by a dial thermometer 15 adjacent the cell. The proportion of the active day is then deduced from standard graphs, e. g. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), or tables, the temperature of the slurry being kept at a fixed predetermined value or graphs being provided for varying temperatures. The resulting information can then be used to regulate the proportion of the active day in the composition.
