Abstract

A temperature indicator comprises a reversible thermochromic compound having a basic empirical formula of Ag 2 Hg I 4 with the addition of either bromine or gold. The above basic compound changes colour from yellow to orange-red at 50‹ C. and addition of bromine lowers this to 42‹ C. independent of the amount of bromine added. The gold is introduced by reaction of the basic compound with gold bromide at an elevated temperature and by variation of the quantity of gold present, transition temperatures between 20‹ C. and 50‹ C. may be obtained. A graded series of complexes with differing gold content may be deposited in or on a strip of material to provide a solid thermometer. A continuously graded calibrated strip may also be used. The strip may be flexible so that it may be attached to the human body or it may be disposed in a porous matrix. Also a bandage may be provided with an array of spaced sections of thermochromic material having a transition temperature slightly above normal body temperature so as to indicate inflamed areas of the body.
