Abstract

Foamed synthetic resins are produced by reacting together a telomer having a low softening point and containing units of a monomer which has a hydrogen atom which is directly bonded to carbon and is activated by two electron-attracting groups and units of a copolymerizable monomer, and the condensation product of an aldehyde and a polyfunctional amine, or a mixture of the aldehyde and the polyfunctional amine or a salt thereof, in the presence of an inert volatile liquid which is vaporized during the course of the reaction. Suitable telomers include as the reactive component units of an allyl or vinyl ester of a b -ketocarboxylic acid, e.g. acetoacetic acid, or of malonic acid, cyanoacetic acid, an alkylmalonic acid, p-nitrophenylacetic acid, benzoylacetic acid, o-nitrophenyl-a -hydroxyacetic acid, pyruvic acid, benzoylmethylmalonic acid, an a -alkylacetoacetic acid or 2,3-dicarboxypropanoic acid. Suitable monomers copolymerizable therewith include vinyl esters, e.g. vinyl acetate, styrene, acrylic and methacrylic esters, ethylene and vinyl chloride. Specified polyamines are ethylene, propylene and butylene diamines, hexamethylene diamine, piperazine and its derivatives and ethylene glycol bis g -aminopropyl ether. The preferred aldehyde is formaldehyde, but acetaldehyde or crotonaldehyde, or a mixture of one of these with formaldehyde, may be used. A surface-active agent, e.g. a siloxane/ethylene oxide or ethylene oxide/propylene oxide block copolymer may be used. The preferred blowing agents are halogenated alkanes.
