Abstract

Crimped staple fibres are produced by passing a tow of continuous filaments of a polyamide, polyethylene terephthalate or polyolefin at least twice across the same or separate surfaces (provided by one or more bodies) heated to a temperature above the melting point of the filaments so as to heat the tow on two opposing sides continuously along its length, cutting the tow into short fibre lengths and relaxing the continuous filaments or the cut fibres by subjecting them to a shrinkage, e.g. heat, treatment. The temperatures of the surfaces may be similar or different.
