Abstract

1373543 Modifying optical fibres LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS-GmbH 1 Oct 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 45878/71 Heading C1M [Also in Division G2] An optical fibre 1 comprising a core 3 and a sheath 2 is subjected in the region of its coupling end 9 to a high temperature treatment so that a partial material diffusion takes place between the material of the core, and the material of the sheath. This gives a fibre wherein the core is of substantially uniform cross-section throughout its length except in the region 4 of the coupling end of the fibre, where the cross-sectional area of the core is larger than in the major part of the fibre, the cross-sectional planes being parallel. The fibre end may also be compressed or stretched longitudinally during the heat treatment. Fig. 1, also shows a similarly modified optical fibre 5 coupled to the fibre 1.
