Abstract

1,104,862. Rollers; bearings. BOFFYN INDUSTRIAL DESIGNS Ltd. 15 March, 1966 [18 March, 1965], No. 11490/65. Headings F2A and F2U. [Also in Division B8] A lightweight roller of a lightweight roller conveyer, particularly for use in aircraft, comprises a rigid hollow cylindrical outer tube 1, two end plates 5 pressed into the ends of said tube, an inner tube 2 perforated with staggered rows of holes and/or slots, mounted coaxially within the outer tube and projecting through central holes in each of the end plates, and a substantially rigid foam material 4 dispersed throughout both the inner and outer tubes. In making the roller, a foamable material, e.g. polyurethane resin, is injected in fluid form through either one or preferably both ends of the inner tube 2 until the amount of foam inside the roller provides an internal pressure. During foaming, the whole assembly is preferably slowly rotated for even foam distribution. Vent holes or slots 5A in the end plates allow air expulsion during the filling with foam. The outer tube 1 and end plates 5 may be of thin gauge steel or aluminium, a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin such as a glass fibre reinforced polyester resin, or plywood. The inner tube may be cylindrical and of low friction material; alternatively, the inner tube may be of any desired cross-section with the ends sleeved with low-friction material to form bearing journals. As shown, each end of the inner tube, of thin gauge steel is journalled in a bearing sleeve 8 of low friction material, e.g. metal, the sleeve 8 being bonded in a rubber sleeve 7, in turn bonded in a light metal or synthetic resin cup 6 having a flanged end forming a seal in a housing hole in one of two conveyer side beams 10. The side beams 10 are of light metal tube, such as aluminium or aluminium alloy, filled with foam material similar to that used for the rollers. Roller side thrust is taken by thrust washers 9 of a similar material to that of the bearing sleeves 8. Side beam tie-rods 12, with adjusting nuts 12A, are positioned alternately at the top and bottom of the side beams. Conveyer lengths may be connected together by fishplates, hooks or internal spring-loaded catches.
