Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1104705/C2/1> wherein R1 is a tert-alkyl group, R2 and R are, the same or different, halogen atoms or alkyl or alkoxy groups, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3; X is Cl, Br or I; and X1 is Cl or Br. They may be obtained by reacting a a -haloacetanilide of the formula <FORM:1104705/C2/2> with an N-chlorinating or N-brominating agent in the presence of an acid binding agent under weakly alkaline to neutral conditions. Specified chlorinating or brominating agents are elementary chlorine or bromine, calcium hypochlorite or calcium hypobromite, tert-butyl hypochlorite or tert-butyl hypobromite. Specified acid-binding agents are a mixture of sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or borax. Examples are given for the production of compounds in which R1 is tert-butyl, R2 is CH3, X1 is C or Br and X is Cl, Br or I; and in which R1 is tert-butyl, R2 is Cl or OCH3, and X1 and X are Cl. The compounds may be used in the control of plant systems (see Division A5).ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise an N-halo-a -haloacetanilide of the formula:- <FORM:1104705/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 is a tert-alkyl group, R2 and R3 are, the same or different, halogen atoms or alkyl or alkoxy groups, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3; X is Cl, Br or I; and X1 is Cl or Br (see Division C2), and a diluent therefor which may be a further unspecified herbicidal compound. Specified diluents are the conventional extending agents, wetting agents or emulsifying agents. Solid fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate, urea and superphosphate may also be present.
