Abstract

The invention relates to derivatives of a tetracycline antibiotic, probably of formula <FORM:1104655/C2/1> wherein n is 3 or 4 and T is a decarbamoylated radical of a tetracycline antibiotic (especially tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline or demethylchlortetracycline), which derivatives are produced by reacting an internal ester of a hydroxyalkyl sulphonic acid of formula <FORM:1104655/C2/2> wherein n is 3 or 4, with a tetracycline antibiotic. In the case of chloropropane sulphonic acid and chlorobutane sulphonic acid salts, the hydrochloride of the antibiotic is reacted with two moles of the appropriate internal ester. In general, salts are formed with inorganic and organic acids (e.g. aryl or alkyl sulphonic acids) and with inorganic and organic bases (e.g. triethylamine and D(-)a -aminobenzyl penicillin). The compounds are stable and have antibacterial and antibacteriostatic properties. Pharmaceutical compositions for oral, parenteral or topical administration to humans or animals comprise one or more of the above tetracycline derivatives.
