Abstract
Gaseous S-containing compounds in waste gases are oxidized with air at 150-300 DEG C. over a Cu oxide catalyst containing oxides of Ba, Cr, and Ni, prepared by precipitation from solutions of Cu, Ba, Cr and Ni salts followed by calcination, and containing 0.1-1 pt. Cr, 0.01-0.1 pt. Ba, and 0.1-0.5 pt. Ni per pt. by weight Cu. The oxides may be mixed with inert supports, e.g. Al2O3, SiO2, and silicates, preferably of surface area at least 50 m.2/g., by precipitating the support and the oxides together, or by impregnating a preformed support with the salt solution, so that the catalyst contains at least 5% of the oxides. The gas throughput may be 5000-50,000 pts. per pt. by volume of catalyst per hour. The S-containing compounds may be mercaptans, e.g. EtSH, thioethers, e.g. Et2S, sulphuretted turpenes, H2S or CS2.
