Abstract

A composition suitable for sizing polyolefin yarns comprises an aqueous solution of a copolymer prepared by polymerizing itaconic acid with acrylic acid in the weight ratio of 0.5:1 to 2:1 respectively, to produce a copolymer having a Brookfield viscosity of 500-50,000 c.p.s. measured in a 33% by weight aqueous solution at 25 DEG C. The copolymer may be prepared by heating together itaconic acid and acrylic acid in the desired weight ratios in an aqueous medium in the presence of a free-radical initiator, e.g. potassium persulphate, ammonium persulphate, benzoyl peroxide, azobis-isobutyronitrile or a redox system comprising persulphate-metabisulphite. The resulting solution may be diluted and used as the size of the copolymer may be isolated and redissolved in water to prepare the size which preferably contains 1-20% by weight of the copolymer. The size may also contain potato starch.ALSO:Polyolefin yarns, e.g. polyethylene and polypropylene, are sized by treating them with an aqueous solution of a copolymer prepared by polymerizing itaconic acid with acrylic acid in the weight ratio of 0.5:1 to 2:1 respectively, to produce a copolymer having a Brookfield viscosity of 500-50,000 cps measured in a 33% by weight aqueous solution at 25 DEG C. The itaconic acid-acrylic acid copolymer may be applied to the yarn as a 1-20% by weight aqueous solution having a temperature of 35 DEG -75 DEG C. The aqueous solution may also contain potato starch.
