Abstract

Polymers, or copolymers, of thiocarbonyl fluoride having recurring -SCF2- units and having molecular weights at least 2000 are prepared by polymerizing thiocarbonyl fluoride containing less than 5% sulphur- or fluorine-bearing non-polymerizable impurities, with, or without, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer e.g. 1-95% tetrafluoroethylene, or vinyl fluoride. Polymerization may be bulk or solution polymerization at -50 to 150 DEG C. in the presence of free radical addition polymerization initiators, e.g. a a 1-azodiisobutyronitrile, or anionic initiators, e.g. sodium cyanide, triphenyl phosphine, or sodium cyanide in solution in N, N-dimethyl formamide. The polymers vary from low molecular weight waxy solids of m.pt. 35 DEG C. soluble in chloroform to yield coating solutions, to high m.pt. materials, which can be pressed to rubbery films. Specifications 857,650 and 857,651 are referred to.ALSO:Polymers, or copolymers, of thiocarbonyl fluoride having recurring -SCF2- units and having molecular weights at least 2000 are prepared by polymerizing thiocarbonyl fluoride containing less than 5% sulphur- or fluorine-bearing non-polymerizable impurities with, or without, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. 1-95% tetrafluoroethylene, or vinyl fluoride. Polymerization may be bulk or solution polymerization at -50 to 150 DEG C. in the presence of free radical addition polymerization initiators, e.g. a a 1-azodiisobutyronitrile, or anionic initiators, e.g. sodium cyanide, triphenyl phosphine or sodium cyanide in solution in N,N-dimethylformamide. The polymers vary from low molecular weight waxy solids of m.pt. 35 DEG C., soluble in chloroform to yield solutions suitable for coating, to high m. pt. materials which can be pressed to rubbery films. Specifications 857,650 and 857,651 are referred to.
