Abstract
1,104,057. Power - operated sliding door mechanism. G. D. PETERS & CO. (ENGINEERING) Ltd. 7 Feb., 1967 [21 April, 1966], No. 17554/66. Heading E2M. Power-operated sliding door gear is characterised by having a driving mechanism for transmitting a driving force to at least one door leaf, which mechanism includes a poweroperated coupling device arranged and adapted to transmit the driving force only when dooroperating power is present. Preferably, the coupling device includes driving and driven parts and is arranged and adapted to disconnect the parts from each other when the resistance to movement of the driven part exceeds a pre-determined amount or when dooroperating power is absent. The driving and driven parts are preferably arranged and adapted to re-engage automatically on operation of the door gear after restoration of power or reduction of said resistance. A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises an electric motor 2 driving lead screw 3 on which is a nut 4 prevented from rotating by guide 5. Nut 4 forms the driving part of the coupling device and is connected, in operation, to door leaf 8 by a device indicated generally at 7 in Fig. 1. The device 7 comprises two opposed pawls 17, 18 pivoted on a bracket 29 which also carries coils 21, 22 (see Figs. 2, 7); a hanging trigger 6 pivoted on nut 4; and a double-acting spring-loaded plunger unit 15 mounted on nut 4 and serving to hold trigger 6 in a vertical position. The natural tendency of pawls 17, 18 is to adopt a first position as shown by broken lines 17', 18' under the action of their own weight, clear of trigger 6. Coils 21, 22 are conected to the motor power supply and, when energised, hold the pawls up in the second position, shown in full lines. When nut 4 is moved by screw 3, trigger 6 engages one or the other pawl to move leaf 8 and leaf 13, pivoting of trigger 6 being preventd by unit 15. If the power fails, the pawls drop to rest against non-magnetic pins 19, 20. The door leaves are then disconnected from nut 4 and can be moved by hand. When an obstruction prevents movement of the door leaves, the trigger 6 will tend to be deflectd out of the vertical position and will apply a load to unit 15, and if this load is sufficient to overcome the pre-determined compressive force of the spring contained within the unit, then the trigger 6 will be deflected until it disengages from the pawls.
