Abstract
1,103,857. Door closers. P. ZAHN. 24 May, 1965 [25 May, 1964], No. 21815/65. Heading E2M. A fluid-check door closer comprises a housing 11 insertable in a door and having its interior divided into two fluid spaces 35, 20 by a valve body 18, one space 20 being formed by the interior of a hose 19 affixed to valve body 18, valve 18 permitting rapid flow of fluid in one direction but throttled flow in the other direction between the two spaces, and a piston 15 being provided for moving fluid through the valve. As shown, the valve body 18 and hose 19 are formed in piston 15 which runs in housing 11. An end member 12 of the piston is connected via linkage to the door frame to load a spring 28 as the door is opened, fluid flowing from hose 19 into space 35 via bore 22 and past a flexible valve ring 26. As the door closes under the action of spring 28, it is checked by fluid throttling through a groove 27 between ring 26 and body 18, and through a one-way ball valve 23 into hose 19, bore 22 being blocked by ring 26 forced against body 18. When the door is almost closed, it encounters a further damping force provided by ring 26 meeting a damping member 32 and loading spring 34 as member 32 slides along pin 31. Pin 31 is longitudinally adjustable to ensure that when the door is closed, ring 26 is forced against member 32 and member 32 is forced against flange 31a of pin 31. The door is then subjected to a locking force because it must be moved against a vacuum in chamber 35 until ring 26 is freed from member 32 for bore 22 to be opened. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), the valve body and hose are stationary in housing 11, and the varying length in the housing of a spring loaded plunger causes fluid flow through the valve. Also, the bore 22 and the ball-valve in bore 21 are dispensed with, the throttle action being provided by groove 27. Ring 26 may be biased toward bores 21, 22 by fixing it in the concaved face of body 18 (Figs. 8, 9, not shown).
