Abstract

Detergent compositions for forming laundry tablets comprise a mixture of (a) 22 to 70% of a heat-dried mixture comprising one part of alkali metal polyphosphate with a high proportion of Form II and 0.3 to 1 part of anionic synthetic detergent or soap; (b) 1 to 12% of nonionic synthetic detergent; and (c) 18 to 77% of alkali metal polyphosphate with a high proportion of Form I; all percentages and parts being given by weight. Sodium tripolyphosphate containing less than 5% of Form I is preferred for (a), and the anionic detergent can be preferably one or more of water-soluble salts of higher aliphatic and aromatic sulphonic and sulphuric acids. The weight ratio in (a) of anionic detergent and/or soap to polyphosphate is from 0.3:1 to 1:1 and a small amount (up to 0.2 part) of nonionic synthetic detergent can also be included. Examples of (b) are ethylene oxide condensates with alkylphenols, esters of sugar alcohols, polyethyleneoxy esters of tall oil acids, ethoxylated alkanols, ethylene-oxide-fatty acid condensates and propylene glycol - ethylene oxide condensates. Sodium tripolyphosphate containing a high proportion of Form I is preferred for (c). Optional additives include fillers, builders, optical brighteners, perfumes, colouring agents, bacteriostats, corrosion inhibitors, anti-redeposition and sequestering agents. The laundry tablets may also be adapted to contain a bleach core.
