Abstract
1,103,551. Laminates. D. ANDERSON & SON Ltd. 5 Feb., 1965 [7 Nov., 1963], No. 44056/63. Heading B5N. Roofing material comprises a layer of bitumen impregnated felt with a woven reinforcement and a layer of insulating material adhered. thereto. The felt may comprise fibrous felt, asbestos felt or fibrous glass tissue. The insulating material may be glass fibre, polyurethane, expanded polystyrene, wood wool slabs or strawboard. To form the roofing material a layer of bitumen felt fed from roll 7 (Fig. 3) is heated by gas jets 12 and passes together with insulating material in the form of separate sheets of expanded polystyrene through the nip of rolls 9 where the layers are pressed together, after which the felt is cut at the joints between the separate sheets either by hand or by an automatic guillotine. If the insulating material is not rigid it may be fed from a roll. The heat may alternatively be an electric or gas radiant heater, or a heated rod or steam pipe. The composite material may be passed between a pair of rolls, one of which carries a number of radially projecting knives so that a series of incisions are formed in the insulating layer, each extending across the width thereof, whereby the composite material can be coiled. Alternatively, the cutting may be done by drawing sharp knives across the sheet or by hot wires before it is joined to the felt.
