Abstract

1,103,469. Change-speed gears; electrostatic brakes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 17 Oct., 1966 [19 Aug., 1965], No. 35653/65. Headings F2D and F2E. A change-speed gear employs electrostatic brakes operable by the Johnsen-Rahbek effect. The degree of engagement of a brake may be varied to vary the speed, or a plurality of brakes may be selectively engaged to introduce various ratios. As shown in Fig. I a two-speed gear has an input sun gear 4 meshing planets 5 on an output carrier 7 which is fast with the ring gear 8 of a second train having a reaction sun 12 stationable by a brake 17 and a carrier 11 fast with the ring 15 of the first train and stationable by a brake 14. Both brakes have semi-conductive carbon layers 18 provided on the train members and in sliding contact with stainless steel brakebands 19. Alternatively the brakes may be of the disc type. Fig. 3 shows a reversing gear having a forward train with an input sun 4, an output carrier 7 and a reaction ring 22 engageable by an electrostatic brake 32 the degree of engagement of which can be varied to vary the slip. Ring 22 is fast with the sun 25 of a reverse train having an output carrier 37 and a reaction ring 28 engageable by an electrostatic brake 32. The voltage applied to either brake can be varied to vary the speed in both forward and reverse. When applied to a vehicle automatic transmission signals representative of engine speed and vehicle speed and a manually variable control signal dependent upon the required torque are fed to control means, and a resultant voltage applied to a brake to vary the ratio. Specification 889,351 is referred to.
