Abstract
1,103,358. Electro-physical measurement. RICHARDS FOUNDRIES Ltd. Nov. 14, 1966 [Dec. 11, 1965], No.52713/65. Heading G1N. The composition of a sample of metal, e.g. the silicon content of iron, is determined by measuring the thermoelectric potential generated by a heated and a cold electrode in contact with the sample, the temperature difference between the electrodes being automatically maintained constant. The sample 5 is contacted by hand-held electrode assemblies 2. The heated electrode assembly, Fig. 2 (not shown) consists of copper tip 9 on a steel shaft which carries an electric heating element 10. The tip is connected by lead 19 to one side of a mirror galvanometer 3, the other side of which is connected to the copper tip of the unheated electrode assembly 2 so as to measure the thermoelectric potential of the two thermojunctions formed with the sample 5. Embedded within, but electrically insulated from, the unheated tip is a copper/constantan thermocouple 26, Fig.3 (not shown), the output of which opposes the output of a thermocouple formed by welding a constantan wire 15 to the heated copper tip 9. The difference between these signals controls an automatic regulator 4 to cause the heater 10 to be intermittently energized so as to maintain a constant temperature gradient between the two copper tips. In a modification, Fig.4 (not shown) the unheated electrode is constituted by a copper cup into which the sample to be measured can be placed in the form of powder or drillings.
