Abstract
1,103,252. Semi-conductor devices. JOHNSON SERVICE CO. 26 Feb., 1965 [14 Oct., 1964], No. 8468/65. Heading HlK. [Also in Division G1 A resistive strain-sensitive core member 2, Fig. 2, is bonded to a surrounding layer 3 of material which changes its dimensions with changes in relative humidity of the adjacent atmosphere. The core 2 may be of an inorganic polymer, or of an organic polymer such as a cellulose ester, and has conductive particles of, for example carbon, aluminium dust, or zinc dust embedded therein. A further layer (7, Fig. 3 not shown) of cellulose ester having no conductive particles may separate the resistive core (5) and the outer moisture-sensitive layer (8) the structure being formed by coating the core (5) with cellulose ester and hydrolysing the outer surface in an alkali or acid bath to form regenerated cellulose which constitutes the outer layer (8). The complete transducer alternatively may be cylindrical in form (Fig. 4 not shown). The resistive core is mechanically clamped in operation and electrically connected to a battery and ammeter (14 15, Fig. 5, not shown). Several alternative materials are quoted for both the core members and the moisture-sensitive layer.
