Abstract

1,103,027. Hydraulic brakes; fluid springs. GIRLING Ltd. 15 June, 1966 [15 June, 1965], No. 25228/65. Headings F2F and F2S. A vehicle brake control device comprises a valve body 1 housing a piston 4 which in turn houses a spring-loaded, self-closing valve assembly 9, 11, 12, 13. The body 1 is provided with an inlet 2 for hydraulic fluid from a master cylinder and an outlet 3 for fluid to pass to the rear brakes of the vehicle. The control device further comprises a fluid spring, as shown a spring assisted air spring, having centrally apertured end walls 22, 23. The piston 4 is spring-loaded by a spring 14 towards its inoperative position and is provided at its outer end with a valve seat 26 which co-operates with the aperture 22A in the air spring wall 22 when the brakes are operated. The control device also includes a linkage 34, 36 and spring loaded plunger 28 arrangement which plunger 28 is urged towards the air spring as the loading of the vehicle decreases. The plunger 28 is also provided with a valve seat which acts to close the aperture 23A in air spring wall 23 to form, when the brakes are actuated a closed air spring. In the unladen and lightly laden conditions the air spring will be sealed more quickly than in highly laden conditions and thus the piston 4, which, when the valve assembly 9, 11, 12, 13 is automatically closed at a predetermined pressure during a brake actuation, transmits pressure to the rear brakes, is resisted in its brake pressure intensification movement to a greater degree in the unladen than in the laden condition. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the movable wall of the fluid spring which cooperates with the piston comprises a piston movable in the valve body, the valved aperture in the other movable wall being omitted. The device is also disclosed (Fig. 3, not shown) in its mounted position on a vehicle. The fluid spring may comprise an air spring which is mounted in a pressure-tight vessel such that the assembly works at a high pressure or it may comprise a liquid spring.
