Abstract

1,102,969. Bearings; lubricating. N. L. PARR, and E. R. W. MAY. 25 Nov., 1966 [4 Dec., 1965], No. 51537/65. Heading F2A. On a bearing &c., the components are made of a low expansion, inorganic, non-metallic material and are provided with means for the removal of running-in debris from the contacting surfaces of the components. The material may be silicon nitride, silicon carbide or lowexpansion silica glass, for example, and the means for the removal of running-in debris may also lubricate the bearing. In an embodiment, a pair of concentric cylinders 1, 2 are made of silicon nitride and the outer surface of the cylinder 1 is provided with a helical slot 3 having a compact of graphite fibres 4 therein. The latter collect and entrap running-in debris and dispense continuously a thin smear of graphite over the contacting surfaces. The graphite may be replaced by boron nitride, tungsten diselenide or molybdenum disulphide.
