Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the anti-wear property of a cutting tool by coating only a flank and rake face except for the cutting edge of super-hand cutting tool with a layer of carbide, nitride and oxide of metal in groups 4a-4b on a periodic law table of such as boron or two or more kinds of solid solutions of these materials. CONSTITUTION:A cutting edge 1c formed by a flank 1b and rake face 1a of a coated cutting tool is not coated with any layer, but a tool 1A of sintered hard alloy is exposed directly to the outside. The flank 1b and rake face 1a are coated with a coating layer 1B which consists of one kind of a single layer or two or more kinds of multiple layers of carbide, nitride and oxide of metal in groups 4a-6a on a periodic law table of such as boron, silicon and aluminum or those selected from groups consisting of these two or more solid solutions to prevent the cutting edge from dropping out due to the proceeding of the wear of cutter. A super-hard cutting tool 1A is exposed in the cutting edge 1e while the flank 1b and rake face 1a are coated with the coating layer 1B so that the anti-wear property of the tool can be improved.
