Abstract
1,102,945. Joint-making packing; pipe joints. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 Jan., 1966 [27 Jan., 1965], No. 3088/66. Headings F2B and F2G. A vacuum seal comprises a knife edge 1a co-operating with a metal 5 of low vapour pressure is liquid at the temperature required for degassing purposes to define a space 3 to be evacuated, a further vacuum space 4 being provided externally of the knife edge and sealed from atmosphere by a pressure seal 6, 8, the component 6 of which is resiliently-connected as by a bellows 7 to the wall of the space to be evacuated so that pressure can be exerted independently on the knife edge and pressure seal. To make a seal between a bell 1 and base-plate 2 of a vacuum vessel, the spaces 3, 4 are evacuated through tubes 9, 10 so as to cause the knife edge of the bell to be pressed into the metal 5 which may be indium, lead, tin, bismuth or thallium and the component 6 to be pressed into a rubber sealing ring 8. Heating elements 11, 12 are then used to raise the temperature to effect degassing of the vacuum vessel and melt the metal 5 so as to establish a high-vacuum seal. The rubber sealing ring 8 is protected by cooling water ducts 13, 14 and the bellows 7 may be made of rubber, plastics or metal.
