Abstract

1,102,659. Rollers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 26 July, 1966, No. 33489/66. Heading F2U. [Also in Division D1] A winding apparatus to be driven by a traverse roll comprises a tubular housing 17 rotatably mounted on a spindle 13 with at least three annular rings mounted on the housing 11 including (1) first ring(s) 25 for centring a tubular core 7, which latter receives the filamentary material, rings 25 having a rigid outside surface and being depressible and having an outside diameter the same as the inside diameter of the core 7; (2) second ring(s) 29 for securing the core 7 to the housing 11, these rings being compressible and having a high coefficient of friction and having an outside diameter which is normally slightly greater than the inside diameter of the core 7 but equals this inside diameter when the core is mounted on the housing; (3) third ring(s) 27 for securing the core 7 to the housing 11, these rings being made of material capable of radial expansion due to centrifugal forces and having an outside diameter which is normally slightly less than the inside diameter of the core 7, but equals this inside diameter when the housing is rotated. Centring rings 25 can be made of spring steel, nylon polycarbonates, polyethylene or polyformaldehyde. Centring rings 25 depress slightly when core 7 is on the rings and thus can having a resilient support 43 to prevent this ring acquiring a permanent set under the pressure of the core, see Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). Support 43 can be made of a high density elastomeric material, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber or flexible polyurethane foam. Gripping rings 29 can be made of flexible polyurethane foam, a preferred design of this ring is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). Expandable rings 27 can be made of a high density elastomeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber, see Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). Ring spacers 33 and 35 can be made of metal or resin-impregnated paper. Bearing spacer 17 and the housing can be made of steel. Ring retainers 31 can be made of metal or plastics, e.g. nylon. Stop 39 acts as a driving wheel on the traverse roll 1 (see Fig. 1, not shown) at the start of winding since its diameter is slightly larger than that of core 7, and can be made of a laminated plastic ring fitted on to a steel ring on housing 11.
