Abstract

An acid is recovered from a spent acid liquor containing the acid and a contaminating salt by adding to the liquor a chemical compound to reduce the solubility of the salt or to convert it to another salt of reduced solubility, and passing the liquor through a tower containing packing countercurrent to a stream of air, whereby the solution is cooled and the salt crystallizes and is removed. The added chemical compound may be ammonium sulphate, sodium chloride, sulphuric acid, an anionic surface tension reducing agent, or an aqueous solution of acetone or an alcohol. In one embodiment, sulphuric acid is added to a spent liquor containing HCl and FeCl2, the FeCl2 being subsequently crystallized and the HCl recovered. In another embodiment, ammonium sulphate is added to a pickling liquor containing H2SO4 and FeSO4, the ferrous ammonium sulphate thus formed being subsequently crystallized and the H2SO4 recovered. The process is also applicable to spent liquors containing nitric acid or hydrofluoric acid.
