Abstract

1,102,450. Surgical stone-crushing apparatus. Y. G. EDINY, O. G. BALAEV and B. K. GOSTKIN. 1 April, 1965, No. 13821/65. Heading A5R. Apparatus for crushing stones in the bladder comprises a cystoscope (25) adapted to be inserted into the bladder, a first elongate elastic lithotrite 7 connected to means for creating mechanical oscillations of predominantly ultrasonic frequency, a second lithotrite 14 having electrodes connected to an electrical pulse generator so that electrical discharges may be generated in the bladder, and control means 35 adapted to select operation of either the pulse generator or the means for creating ultrasonic oscillations, the lithotrites being able to be inserted into the bladder through an opening in the cystroscope. As shown, the lithotrite 7 applies mechanical oscillations derived from an electrical ultrasonic generator 1 and a transducer 4, and the lithotrite 14 applies electrical pulse discharges derived from a pulse generator 17 which includes (see also Figure 2, not shown) capacitors (22, 23) and discharge gaps (24). A selector switch 35 provides the control means and the apparatus also includes a foot pedal 32 for switching on the apparatus, a relay 34 and a time recording unit 33. The lithotrite 7 is secured to the apparatus by a soldered link 6 which may be melted by a timed heater 10 to allow the lithotrite to be replaced. The apparatus is arranged such that it will not operate if the connection to an earthing device (28) is incomplete.
