A work bench for use in testing fuel pumps, fuel injectors or fuel nozzles of compression ignition engines comprises a metal box-like structure having located therein a driving motor 14, a fuel reservoir 12 and infinitely variable speed ratio transmission means 16 and having side and end walls 26, 28 which project upwards from a base and support a bench top 32 which overlies the upper edges of the walls. The bench top is provided with ribs (42) Fig. 2 (not shown) on its underside, the upper portions of the end and side walls being bolted or screwed to the ribs. The base 30 of the bench is in the form of a tray which is formed by turning upwards the marginal portions of a flat, rectangular sheet of metal, the corners of the tray being sealed by welding or brazing to collect free fluid which has been spilt. The side and end walls have their lower ends located within the tray. The end walls 28 have their upright edges turned inwards to give the said walls sufficient rigidity to support the bench top when the side walls are removed. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the two end walls are formed integrally with the base of the bench.
