Abstract

Novel 31,31-disubstituted-spiro -[indoline-3,21-oxiran]-2-ones of the general formula <FORM:1101794/C2/1> where R is H or C1- 8 alkyl, and R1 and R2 are alkyl, phenyl, alkylphenyl, alkoxyphenyl, halophenyl, naphthyl, aralkyl or pyridyl, are prepared by epoxidation of a 3-(di-substituted-methylene)oxindole with aqueous hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a basic catalyst. The 3-(di-substituted methylene) oxindoles have the general formula <FORM:1101794/C2/2> and the invention also includes such compounds per se. They are prepared by heating together an appropriate 3-unsubstituted oxindole and a ketone of formula O=CR1R2. The compounds of the first general formula have pharmaceutical properties.ALSO:Therapeutic compositions suitable for oral or parenteral application comprise a compound of the general formula <FORM:1101794/A5-A6/1> where R is H or C1-8 alkyl, and R1 and R2 are C1-8 alkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, naphthyl, aralkyl, or pyridyl. The compositions are active as sedatives, diuretics, anticonvulsants, enzyme inhibitors, and sleep potentiators, and may be used in conjunction with hexobarbital.
