Abstract

1,101,760. Filing papers. L. R. BEYER. 7 Dec., 1965 [7 Dec., 1964], No. 51869/65. Heading B6E. A ring binder assembly comprises an elongated back plate 26 having a number of flexible fingers 29-31 extending from one edge 28 and each formed with an end portion 32 shaped to interlock with a corresponding receiving portion 33 on or adjacent the other edge 27 of the plate, by a first movement in a direction longitudinally of the plate, and a second movement in a direction transverse to the first, the fingers then defining the rings of the assembly. The complete assembly can be formed integrally from a resinous plastics material by a moulding operation. The plate 26, which is adapted to be secured by rivets in a binder, may comprise two parts 22, 23 joined end-toend by a dove-tail tongue 24 engaging in a groove 25 on the corresponding parts; or it may be a single plate. The fingers are formed on the upstanding edge 28, and each has a hooked end 32. The portion 33 (Figs. 3-5), comprises an L-shaped wall (44) projecting from the inside of the upstanding edge 27, forming an opening for receiving the hooked end 32 by a movement of the latter longitudinally of the plate 26, and a slot (55-57) in the edge 27 receives the hooked end 32 by a downward, and then a transverse, movement. In a modification (Figs. 7 and 8), the ring binder assembly comprises a back plate (62), parallel side walls (63, 64), flexible fingers (65) on the wall (64) having hook ends (66) which can engage interlocking portions (67) in the plate adjacent the wall (63). Each portion (67) comprises a slot (70) which is extended and wider at (72), and restricted at (73). The hook end (66) is inserted into the slot at the wider end (72), moved longitudinally along the slot, and then transversally of the slot so that the hook engages a complementary bevelled part (76) in the undersurface of the wall (63). In a further modification (Figs. 9 and 10), the back plate and the interlocking portions are similar, but all the fingers (92-94) are integral with a longitudinal strip (97) which has a weakened hinge line (96), and is integral with the side wall (64). Thus, the fingers (92-94) can be moved together simultaneously.
