Abstract
1,101,471. Friction clutches and brakes. ABEX CORPORATION. 23 March, 1966, No. 12849/66. Headings F2C and F2E. In a friction disc clutch or disc or drum/shoe brake, for large vehicles, e.g. in an automatic change speed gear, comprising a friction lining and a co-operating steel opposed surface exposed to cooling oil, the material of the friction lining has an interconnecting porosity and permeability, i.e. it presents, continuously with wear, a surface composed of interconnected voids, and comprises more than 50% carbon (excluding the diamond form). The lining may be of graphite, such as powdered graphite having a furfural resin (e.g. 78% by weight artificial graphite and 22% by weight furfural resin) phenol formaldehyde resin or any thermosetting resin binder, or a non-resin, e.g. pitch, binder; an all-carbonaceous material in which an original binder has itself been carbonized or graphitized; or an amorphous allotrope, e.g. petroleum coke, lamp black, charcoal, coal flour. The lining may be fixed to a solid metal backing plate as by an adhesive resin. Reduction of relative movement of the clutch or brake members is initially by shearing of a thin film of the cooling oil which film is probably ultimately broken. The oil serves to flush away loosened graphite particles. As shown, a multi-disc friction clutch comprises steel driving discs 14 having graphite linings bonded thereto and splined to a driving member 13, itself splined on a shaft 12, and steel driven discs 15 engaging a driven member 16 through pins 17. The discs are engaged by fluid pressure actuation of a piston 19 and disengaged by means, e.g. springs, not shown. Cooling oil is supplied through a port 11 in the shaft 12.
