Abstract

The process of Specification 906,120 in which gaseous formaldehyde is continually passed into urea solution in a multi-stage process to obtain a urea:formaldehyde ratio between 1:4 and 1:10 is improved by adding hexamethylenetetramine to maintain the pH of the solution between 7 and 8.5. The hexamethylenetetramine may be generated in situ by passing ammonia, which reacts with the HCHO in the solution.
